Anthropic just took the lead over OpenAI. At least when it comes to verified business customers. That's what Ramp's latest AI Index reveals.

According to the survey, 34.4% of businesses using Ramp's fintech services are now paying for Anthropic's AI. OpenAI? They're at 32.3%. It's the first time Anthropic has hit the top spot. A significant shift in the competitive AI landscape.

Anthropic's Climb

Ramp economist Ara Kharazian points to Anthropic's laser focus on sectors like finance, tech, and professional services. That's a key growth driver, he says. "Anthropic has already been in the lead amongst the high adoption groups," Kharazian noted. They've really expanded their reach.

Over the past year, Anthropic's business customer base surged. From 9% to over a third of Ramp's participating companies. That's a 26% jump. OpenAI's share, meanwhile, dipped 1% in the same period.

The Bigger Picture

It's not just Ramp's data, either. OpenRouter's leaderboard, which tracks a different user base, last recorded OpenAI ahead of Anthropic in December 2025. Anthropic's customer expansion is part of a bigger industry trend. Overall AI product use climbed 9% last year.

Sure, these figures are based on Ramp's clients. But they cover a substantial, diverse sample of over 50,000 companies. That lends credibility to the findings.

A European Angle

Anthropic's rise could definitely sway AI adoption in Europe. The EU's strict data privacy laws, GDPR for example, might favor companies like Anthropic. They offer robust compliance and data handling. That's a big deal.

European firms are integrating more AI. Anthropic's customer focus? It could really click with the continent's tech-savvy industries.

What This Means

For businesses weighing AI solutions, Anthropic's momentum could make a strong case to check them out. They're focused on technical customer needs, and they're executing. A solid alternative to OpenAI.

More companies are adopting AI. So, maybe it's time to reassess your AI strategy. Make sure you're using the best tools available.

What We Don't Know Yet

Will this lead last? That's the question. Kharazian, for one, is skeptical about Anthropic's long-term hold. And the data? It's just Ramp users. The wider market dynamics are still pretty fuzzy.

Why It Matters

That headline – Anthropic beating OpenAI in business clients – it's a big deal. A real shift in the AI landscape. It shows growing competition among AI providers. And it highlights how important strategic focus and execution are.

AI's becoming core to business. Companies like Anthropic, tailoring their offerings? They're gaining ground. Reshaping the industry.
